11 Digit Mobile numbers!!

Coming January'10 and all mobile phone users will have 11-digit mobile numbers instead of their 10-digit numbers currently.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has amended the National Numbering Plan 2003 for migration to an 11-digit numbering plan in mobile services by prefixing the number ‘9’ to the existing two-digit PLMN Access Code.

A PLMN is identified by the Mobile Country Code (MCC) and the Mobile Network Code (MNC). Every service provider has its own PLMN, which interconnects with other PLMNs and public switched telephone networks (PSTNs) for telephone communications, or with internet service providers for data and internet access.

The proposed migration from the existing 10-digit number to an 11-digit numbering plan is likely to be implemented from January 1, 2010, according to an internal DoT note.

A new numbering plan was required because India’s mobile subscriber base has grown at a faster pace than expected. The numbering plan that is applicable now was formulated in 2003 on a forecast of 50 per cent teledensity by 2030.

With India adding over 10-14 million mobile subscribers each month, the wireless subscriber base has already crossed 500 million, a year ahead of the target.
A few years ago, the government had prefixed the number ‘2’ to all BSNL and MTNL fixed-line phones across the country to accommodate more connections.

CAT servers crash on first due to over load

The Common Admission Test (CAT) to the Indian Institutes of Managements (IIM)and other premier Business schools turned out to be a major blunder as servers crashed across India on Saturday, when the test was a online for the first time.

For the past 33 years, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have been conducting the Common Admission Test (CAT) in a paper-pencil format. It was this year that the most important entrance examination for MBA aspirants in India was taken online and made a Computer-based Test.

The first-ever online CAT was greeted by a technical glitch that led to the cancellation of the examination in Chennai, Kolkata, Bhopal, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune, as per reports.

CAT 2009 was taken by nearly 2,50, 000 students across the country.The test is being held in 32 cities between November 28 and December 7.

Entry to IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode and Shillong is determined by CAT score.

Bhuvan is an ambitious and dream project of ISRO .
Bhuvan showcases Indian images by the superimposition of these IRS satellite imageries on 3D globe.
It displays satellite images of varying resolution of India’s surface, looking perpendicularly down or at an oblique angle, with different perspectives and can navigate through 3D viewing environment.
Most of the Indian terrain is covered upto at least 5.8 meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters from AWifs Sensor.

Access, explore and visualise 2D and 3D image data along with rich thematic information on Soil, wasteland, water resources etc.

Visualise multi-resolution, multi-sensor, multi-temporal image data
